“At times, advocating for students requires challenging long-held assumptions of students, other faculty, or administrators” (Danielson, 2007, p. 106). The culture of my secondary student teaching placement was such that a number of students were virtually expected to fail high school before even entering as freshmen. Instead of working with these students to figure out ways to promote their strengths and improve any academic weaknesses, many of these students were seemingly tossed to the wayside. As educators, we should “work diligently for the students’ best interests, whether that means convincing a colleague that a student deserves an opportunity or supporting a student’s efforts at self-improvement” (Danielson, 2007, p. 106). Many students in the public school setting don’t receive adequate support from their parents. However, as an educator, I should feel somewhat responsible for striving to make each and every student successful.
As a teacher, I am responsible for the well being of each of my students while they are in my class. Not only am I teaching them about the importance of physical activity, but I also want to instill in them positive character traits and attributes. One way I can do this is by modeling the behavior. If I want my students to be honest and caring individuals, I need to display that same attitude towards my students. I strive to be honest and maintain good integrity in everything I do, no matter how small the task may seem.
