Teachers, who choose to interact with their students with respect and rapport, are creating an environment that fosters trust and as a result, increases learning among the students. As a young teacher, I need to be careful not to earn the respect of my students by being their buddy. I was surprised in my practicum teaching at Keene High School, how respectful the students were towards me. Going into the school, I expected the students to test my authority. Because I demanded the attention and respect of the students from my initial meeting with them, I didn't experience any issues of disrespect.
Every student has potential to learn and be successful in his/her own way. Even the students with learning or behavior problems, have the opportunity to do well in the classroom. It is vital that teachers believe in their students and not look at certain students through a sometimes negative stereotypical perspective because of past experiences.

At the beginning of each lesson, I reminded my students to give positive encouragement rather than negative put-downs. I didn't want a student's day ruined by a negative comment in PE class.

I believe in giving students positive attention. Some students act out in class because they want to receive attention, which often times can be negative. I strive to treat each of my students the same way that I would like to be treated.

Positive Discipline PlanDuring my teaching at both the elementary and secondary level, I implemented the "3 strike" discipline plan. At the first offense, the student received a warning. At the second offense, the student sat out for a minute to think about his/her behavior and the was allowed back into the activity. At the third offense, the student was required to sit out and if deemed appropriate, was sent to the principal's office. If a student was acting in an inappropriate manner, I preferred to take him/her aside from the activity and speak face to face.

Character Development in ClassThe following documents show how I implemented strategies to help students demonstrate responsible personal and social behaviors in a productive learning environment. The Reading Reaction Project is geared towards the secondary level. If a student is displaying inappropriate behavior and is asked to sit out of class, he/she would be required to read through the report which is centered around professional athletes who displayed positive and negative behavior. After reading the articles, the student

In my classroom, each student is treated equally and fairly. As a PE teacher, I hope to create a class environment where my students feel respected, valued, and comfortable to be themselves.
The 5th graders learned about working together cooperatively during the Team-building Unit. They finished off the week by taking on the challenge of scaling the rock climbing wall.
