My secondary student teaching was completed at Conant High School. CHS serves the rural towns of Jaffrey and Rindge, NH. The student enrollment is just around 500 students. I was responsible for teaching students from grades 9-12 (ages 14-18 years old). Along with teaching three block classes a day (87 minutes each), I was responsible for monitoring 2-3 lunch periods a week. I assisted with the bocce ball, horseshoes, and tennis units and created and taught a 9 lesson soccer unit. I also administered the FitnessGram fitness test. Along with teaching responsibilities I was in charge of assigning daily participation grades and grading Physical Education reflection journals and tests.
What I Learned...

Flexibility: During my time at CHS I dealt with many challenging situations. I learned to be flexible with the sometimes inadequate facilities for Physical Education. CHS shares the gymnasium with the middle school. Rainy days posed the greatest challenge because class could not be held outdoors and often times the gym was not available. To be best prepared I created a "rainy day" lesson idea that could be taught in the cafeteria when the gym was being used by the middle school.
Modification: While teaching at CHS, I had to modify my lesson in order for it to be effective among the students from class to class. One class was very capable and was able to stay on task with relatively few activities. However, another class needed many different fast paced activities in order to stay on task and keep disruptions to a minimum. If an activity wasn't going well, I learned to quickly reevaluate the activity to meet the needs of the students.
Persistence: I was presented with a challenging teaching situation, especially among a few of my students. The town and school culture wasn't always held to the highest standards. The challenge for me was to take the failing students who did not care about their grades, and try to find ways to get them involved in class. I attempted to show an interest in those specific students and let them know that I wanted them to participate in class and get a passing grade. Sometimes it worked and a few would participate. However, many times the students would be influenced by friends to not participate and sit out of class. I think it is important to be persistent with the students because it shows them that as the teacher, I care about them.

After-School Volleyball ClubWhile student teaching at Conant High School, I started an after school Volleyball club. CHS does not offer Volleyball as a sport. The first week, 9 students came. Each week thereafter more and more students showed an interest. During the last week of the club, 19 students came. The students were very excited for the opportunity to play. I had many parents, school faculty, and the athletic director thank me for my efforts in forming and running the club.
